Germany Faces Risk of Losing Schlotterbeck Due to Injury
Germany is in danger of losing its star defender Nico Schlotterbeck for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup . He suffered an ankle injury in the match against Ivory Coast.
Germany has secured its place in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup as group winners after their 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast at Toronto Stadium on Sunday (June 21, 2026).
Nagelsmann's team sits atop the table with six points. They can't be overtaken by second-placed Ivory Coast, who have three points due to their superior head-to-head record. Ecuador and Curacao also can't overtake Germany, having only earned one point each.
However, Germany's success in securing a place in the round of 32 came at a cost. Their star defender, Nico Schlotterbeck, suffered an injury.
The Borussia Dortmund player suffered an ankle injury in the match against Ivory Coast in the 13th minute. He forced himself to play on but then requested to be substituted late in the first half. Antonio Rüdiger came on for Schlotterbeck.
Schlotterbeck's injury is thought to be quite serious. Nagelsmann also revealed that Schlotterbeck's condition is not good.
"It doesn't look good," Nagelsmann said of Schlotterbeck's condition, as quoted by AS.
Schlotterbeck immediately underwent an MRI to determine the extent of his injury. Germany anxiously awaited the results.
If Schlotterbeck's injury is serious, he will miss the rest of the 2026 World Cup. This would be very bad news for Germany.
The 26-year-old is Germany's first-choice center-back, playing on the left side of a three-man defense. He started each of Germany's first two matches at the 2026 World Cup.
Antonio Rüdiger is likely to replace Schlotterbeck if he's absent. Rüdiger has a wealth of experience. However, his speed isn't as good as his 33-year-old age.
